Ashley Gorge's Record September: What the 2026 Visitor Numbers Mean

More people are discovering the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata, and September's numbers give us a clear picture of just how busy it has become.

Uintah County's new February-September 2026 visitor report lists 1,917 recorded visits in September, making it the busiest month covered by the report. That's a 69% increase from August and 23% above June's previous high.

For us at Dyno Outfitters, it's exciting to see so many people exploring the gorge. The numbers also offer some useful takeaways for your next trip, from choosing a day to deciding how much support your group needs.

September Set a New High for the 2026 Season

September's 1,917 recorded visits topped June's 1,562 and August's 1,137. That's 780 more recorded visits than August and 355 more than June.

The report also lists 6,641 unique visitors and representation from 23 states across its reporting period. Utah accounts for about 81% of recorded activity, showing how strongly the gorge is drawing people from within the state.

This is a comparison within the 2026 season. The report doesn't include matching 2025 figures, so it doesn't establish a year-over-year growth rate.

Saturdays Are the Busiest. Weekdays Deserve a Look.

The biggest planning takeaway is how much activity falls on Saturdays.

The county recorded 3,399 Saturday visits, representing roughly 40% of reported activity. Tuesday and Wednesday had the lightest recorded traffic, with 500 and 516 visits respectively across the reporting period.

If you can make a weekday work, the numbers suggest a better chance of a quieter experience. That doesn't guarantee an empty route, but it gives you a useful starting point when choosing your date.

If Saturday is your best option, reserve equipment or a guided trip in advance and leave room in your schedule for a busier day. Traffic can affect your pace, especially when groups move at different speeds.

More Than 1,000 People Came Back

The report identifies 1,092 repeat visitors, or 16.4% of its unique visitors, with multiple recorded visits this season.

That's encouraging to see. Ashley Gorge is a place people are choosing to return to, whether they're bringing a different group or planning another day in the canyon.

For returning visitors, each trip still deserves its own plan. Review the current map, check conditions, and choose a route that fits everyone coming with you.

Families Are Part of the Picture Too

Visitors under 18 account for 14.7% of the report's recorded activity. The report also shows a higher proportion of minors in guided groups than in self-guided groups.

Before booking a family outing, review the current age, reach, weight, and experience requirements. Historical ages in a visitor report are not eligibility rules. Contact Dyno Outfitters if you need help deciding which trip fits your group.

More Visitors Make Preparation More Valuable

The report shows that self-guided trips make up the large majority of recorded activity. Exploring independently means your group is responsible for route choices, equipment use, pace, and decisions about when to continue or exit.

A rental reservation (assuming you do not have the required specialized gear. No your standard climbing and canyoneering gear is not acceptable replacements for a via ferrata lanyard) and a signed waiver are parts of preparation. You'll also need the experience required for self-guided climbing and a plan that fits your group.

Dyno Outfitters is the only local gear rental company for Ashley Gorge, with in-person pickup in Vernal. We answer questions, review equipment use, and include a rest carabiner with our complete rental kits.

If this is your first via ferrata or you want professional support throughout the climb, our guided trips include equipment, instruction, and help choosing a route suited to your group.

Reserve via ferrata gear or explore guided trips.

What This Means for Vernal

Visitors arriving from around Utah and beyond have reasons to stop in Vernal for food, lodging, equipment, and other adventures. The visitor report doesn't measure their spending, so it can't tell us the economic impact in dollars. It does show the audience Ashley Gorge is bringing to the area.

As participation grows, thoughtful planning matters for visitors and the community alike. Choosing a weekday when possible, arriving prepared, and respecting the canyon all help support a better experience.

Thanks to everyone who has explored Ashley Gorge this season. We're excited to help you plan your first visit or your next one.
