Thinking about bringing your kids to Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata? Climbing canyon walls, crossing bridges, and exploring together can make for a memorable family adventure near Vernal, Utah.
Before you book, though, check your child’s age, weight, reach, and comfort with heights. Kids can participate, including some who fall outside the usual weight range, but the right guidance and preparation are required.
Weight Restrictions: When a Guide Is Required
The published weight range for self-guided participation is 90 to 265 pounds, including your pack. Anyone outside that range requires a professional guide. This applies to adults as well as children.
A child under 90 pounds may still participate, but Uintah County requires a county-permitted professional guide and a supplemental belay system on sections with significant vertical climbing. A supplemental belay is an additional rope system managed by the guide.
Having a parent along, even one with climbing experience, does not replace that requirement. Contact us before booking so we can discuss your child’s eligibility and arrange the appropriate guided trip.
Age and Reach Requirements for Kids
County rules require climbers under 16 to be accompanied by an adult. A parent or legal guardian must also sign the county waiver for minors, and participants must carry proof of completion while climbing.
At Dyno Outfitters, our guided trips have their own participation requirements:
Half-day Raptor Run: Generally ages 10 and older, with a 62-inch reach from the ground. Some experienced children ages 8 or 9 may be considered with advance approval.
Full-day Apex Ascent: Generally ages 13 and older, with a 68-inch reach and a minimum weight of 90 pounds.
Reach means how high your child can reach from the ground, rather than their standing height. The published course minimum is 62 inches. Booking a guide does not automatically waive age, reach, or trip requirements, so talk with us before making plans for a younger or smaller child.
Choose a Trip That Fits Your Family
Meeting the participation requirements is the starting point. Think about how your child handles hiking, heights, physical effort, and following instructions when something feels challenging.
We recommend starting with a shorter outing for younger children. Give them a clear idea of what to expect, leave room for breaks, and choose a day that fits their energy and confidence.
Our guides can help select a route suited to your group and provide equipment instruction and coaching throughout the adventure. Explore our guided via ferrata trips to compare your options.
Bring the Right Gear and Supplies
Participants need the required helmet, harness, and via ferrata lanyard, along with appropriate footwear. Pack water, snacks, sun protection, and layers for changing conditions.
Review our gear and packing guide before your visit, and make sure your child’s equipment fits properly.
Talk With Us Before Booking
