Do You Have to Complete the Entire Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata?

No. You do not have to complete every section of Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata. You can plan a shorter outing based on your group’s experience, fitness, comfort with heights, and available time.

The course has multiple climbing sectors, connecting trails, bypasses, and designated exits. That gives you options for exploring part of the Gorge without committing to the longest route.

Can You Do a Shorter Route?

Yes. One option uses Outlaw and the Abduction Cut-Off Trail to connect with the Abduction exit, skipping much of the longer route through the canyon.

Other trail connections let you bypass certain climbing sections or access different parts of the course. The right combination depends on what your group is prepared to handle. Review our route maps and sector descriptions before choosing your plan.

Does Shorter Mean Easier?

A shorter outing reduces how much of the course you cover, but it can still include steep hiking, exposed climbing, and a demanding exit.

For example, Abduction is a vertical climb out of the canyon, even when you reach it using the cut-off. Consider the difficulty of each section, not just the distance or number of sectors you’ll complete.

For your first visit, we recommend choosing a manageable route and giving yourself plenty of time for breaks. You can always plan another trip to explore more.

Know Your Exit Before You Start

Decide how you’ll get out before entering a climbing section. Some sectors are one-way, so you cannot assume you’ll be able to turn around whenever you want.

Study the designated exits and trail connections, follow posted directions, and save the map to your phone. Allow enough daylight, water, and energy for your exit and the hike back to the parking area.
