Route Overview
Ashley Gorge at Land Before Climb
Land Before Climb is the expanse of slickrock connecting Lower Outlaw with the approaches to The Pump and the Cease and Desist Trail. The area includes the Shally’s Ladder Shortcut trail between Lower Outlaw and Shally’s Ladder (the start of the Pump), as well as the recognizable bench swing seen in many photographs of the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata.
Rest, have a snack, and use the restroom if you need (be sure to use a WAG bag and pack out all solid waste!). This is a good place to evaluate the group’s energy, water, available daylight, and comfort with exposure before continuing. Climbers who are already tired or uncertain can use the surrounding trails to choose a shorter or less demanding route.
