Route Overview
Ashley Gorge Through The Pump
The Pump is one of the longest and most physically demanding sections of the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata. It starts with Shally’s Ladder (try it backwards if you’re feeling strong!), then takes you through language arts (choose from hard: Proper English, harder: Bad Grammar, or hardest: Syntax Error), with each option providing a different level and style of difficulty.
From there, you’ll travel through features like Boulanger Crack, the Bridgette, and the Saddle, before reaching sector 5—Thagomizer—or the downclimb to hike back up to the Soup.
The Pump sector travels in one direction, so climbers should evaluate their group before entering the committed beginning portion of the route. Those who are unsure about the opening features can use the Above the Pump Trail or Little Foot Ladder Trail to enter the Pump farther along the sector.
