Route Overview
Entering the Gorge down Outlaw
Outlaw starts at the large map kiosk at the top of the Sunrise Trail. It downclimbs from the canyon rim into Ashley Gorge using fixed cables, rungs, and steep movement down large stair-stepping features, split up by short sections of hiking. Outlaw sector allows traffic in both directions, although descending climbers generally have the right of way unless an ascending climber has already committed to a pitch. Communicate clearly, watch for other groups, and avoid entering a section that is already occupied.
There are several exits off of the Outlaw sector:
As you’re descending, to the left about halfway down you’ll see the “Via Ferrata Tree,” a large Ponderosa that resembles a “VF.” The Abduction Cut-off takes off here, to give you quick access to the top of the first pitch of Abduction (a great option for first timers or those wanting a quick trip on the via).
Just below the Abduction Cut-off, the Above the Pump Trail heads off to the right. This trail takes you past the hardest features on the Pump sector and lets you get back on the route either ¼ or ¾ of the way through the Pump.
Farther down Outlaw is the Shally’s Ladder Shortcut, which takes you directly to the start of the Pump sector without a full descent into the bottom of the canyon.
Follow Outlaw all the way down, and you’ll arrive at the Cease & Desist Trail at the bottom of the canyon, where you can hike to access to the Soup and Jurasskicked.
