Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata

What is Via Ferrata?

“Via ferrata” means “the iron way” in Italian. With a series of rungs and cables anchored into the rock, it’s kind of like a cross between rock climbing and a ropes course. Our via ferrata is designed to make big adventure accessible, even if you’ve never climbed before!
You bring the sense of adventure... and we’ll give you a story you'll be telling for years.

The Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata is Utah’s first public course And the longest public ferrata in the U.S.

You'll scale cliffs, cross cable bridges, and thread your way through the jaw-dropping beauty of Ashley Gorge. No experience? No problem. Our gear and guides make this epic adventure accessible even for beginners.

This is your story—go make it legendary.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Uintah County has stated that the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata will be complete by the end of July. Dyno Outfitters will begin renting gear and taking guided clients out on August 1st!

  • If you can handle a 3-5 mile hike through desert terrain and climb ladders, you'll likely do well on the Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata. The difficulty is rated using the Fletcher/Smith system, ranging from 1 (easiest) to 5 (most difficult), with an additional letter indicating the alpine commitment. The Starter Loop of the AGVF is a 3B on the Fletcher/Smith system, and the Full Circuit is a 4C.

  • Essential gear includes a UIAA-certified climbing helmet, harness, and via ferrata lanyard, along with appropriate footwear, like hiking or approach shoes. You may also want gloves (preferably leather or fingerless), a mid-layer insulated jacket, and a waterproof shell jacket.

  • You know your child best and have a good sense of what they’ll feel comfortable with, but generally on our guided tours we welcome kids as young as 8.

To rent any via ferrata or climbing gear from Dyno Outfitters, clients must be 18. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

  • Yes. Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata rules stipulate that participants must be within the weight range of 88-265lbs (40-120kg). Those outside this range cannot be belayed by recreational parties and require a professional guide (through Dyno Outfitters or other guiding service).

Via Ferrata rules also state that participants must have a minimum reach of 62 inches from the ground in order to safely complete the course.

  • If you have limited rock climbing experience or have never done a via ferrata, then hiring a guide is recommended. If you are outside of the weight range stipulated by the AGVF rules then a guide is required. Guides can help navigate difficult sections and offer additional safety on your adventure.

Uintah County requires all via ferratists to sign a waiver before getting on the course (with or without a guide). Find it here.

In addition, Dyno Outfitters requires a separate waiver for our guided trips and before renting gear.
